After you have finally found good wire wheels, had them sandblasted and powder coated, what can be done to protect the rims when mounting the tires. Here is an idea. Cut two or three lengths of ½” fuel hose. Hard plastic hose may work better. Split the hose on the inside of the curve and slip it over the rim.
In my test, removing a frozen tire from a spare rim, the short lengths of hose didn’t stay in place very well but they did protect the rim from being chipped. They did however leave black smudges on the paint. A short piece of masking tape on the rim should fix that problem. A longer length of hose might stay in place better.
